The need for research on the consequences of cyberbullying

The comment published by Jean-Baptiste Pingault and Tabea Schoeler in Nature Human Behaviour discusses the current state of art of evidence on the consequences of cyberbullying on mental health. We call for more longitudinal studies and the application of causally informative designs to evaluate whether the commonly reported adverse effects on mental health persist when shared environmental and genetic factors are taken into consideration. This approach would also allow to identify individuals that are more vulnerable to its potential adverse effects.
